Big Ocean Stuns M Countdown With Sign Language Choreography Ahead of US Tour

Big Ocean, the groundbreaking trio of deaf and hard-of-hearing idols, delivered a performance that left audiences in awe during their appearance on Mnet M Countdown on March 5. The group comprising Changyeon, PJ, and Jiseok performed their double title track "One Man Army" from their third mini album "THE GREATEST BATTLE," bringing a powerful fusion of sign language-based tutting choreography that set their stage apart from anything else on Korean music television.

A Stage Like No Other

Dressed in sharp, determined-looking casual outfits, the three members commanded the stage alongside more than 20 backup dancers, executing dynamic formations that drew gasps from viewers. What made the performance truly extraordinary was the way Big Ocean wove Korean Sign Language into every movement, transforming tutting choreography into a visual language that communicated the song message with raw emotion and precision.

The choreography depicted a naval battle formation, with the trio symbolically launching ships and executing hawk-wing patterns — a direct reference to Admiral Yi Sun-sin legendary Battle of Myeongnyang, where 12 ships defeated a fleet of over 300. The metaphor was deliberate and deeply personal.

Fighting Prejudice Since Day One

At their media showcase held on March 3 in Seoul, the members opened up about the battles they have faced since long before their debut. Jiseok shared a particularly moving reflection, revealing that he was repeatedly told he could never pursue a music career because of his hearing disability. Rather than accepting those limitations, he channeled that frustration into art.

Changyeon explained that the album represents the most authentic version of Big Ocean yet. Their first album was brighter in tone, but starting from their second release, the group began exploring the inner struggles that shaped them. This third album, he said, captures the fiercest battles they have fought — both against external prejudice and internal doubt.

US Tour on the Horizon

Fresh off this powerful comeback, Big Ocean has announced a seven-city US tour beginning April 10 in Chicago. The tour will take them through New York on April 12, Minneapolis on April 14, Washington D.C. on April 16, Atlanta on April 19, Dallas on April 21, and wrap up in Los Angeles on April 24. For a group that was once told they could not make music, performing across America marks yet another barrier shattered.

All three members contributed to the songwriting on "One Man Army," infusing the track with a personal defiance that resonates far beyond the stage.
