South Korea's beloved dating reality show '나는 솔로' (I Am Solo) returned for its 31st season on April 8, and the premiere episode has immediately become one of the most-discussed in the show's long run. Airing on SBS Plus and ENA as Episode 248, the season opener introduced 14 singles — seven men and seven women — whose professional backgrounds range from practicing dentists and in-house lawyers to a former presidential campaign spokesperson, leaving viewers floored by the sheer diversity on display.

Hosted by the longtime duo of rapper Defconn and actress Song Hae-na, 'I Am Solo' has built its devoted following on the premise that genuine, unscripted connection is possible when ordinary people — albeit unusually accomplished ones — are placed together in an isolated setting called "Solo Land" and allowed to get to know each other free from the distractions of daily life. Season 31 offers perhaps the richest cast the show has ever assembled.

Meet the Men of Season 31

Among the male contestants, the early standout in terms of fan reaction is Yeongho — born in 1992, a dentist who has already opened his own practice. His combination of professional achievement, youthful age, and understated charisma made him one of the most searched names on Korean entertainment portals within hours of the episode's broadcast. Fans have coined the phrase "영앤리치" (young and rich) to describe his appeal.

Rounding out the male lineup is an equally impressive group. Yeongsu works as an automotive designer; Youngshik operates as an IT systems project manager; Cheolsu is a Samsung Electronics engineer; Sangcheol serves as an in-house lawyer (사내변호사) at a major firm; Yeongbae handles mechanical maintenance at a steel company; and Gyeongsu, who emerged as an early fan favorite, owns and operates his own optical shop (안경원).

Gyeongsu's popularity was something of a surprise — the show's editing leaned into his quiet, understated appeal in a way that immediately generated fan interest. By the next morning, clips of him introducing himself had racked up significant views online.

Meet the Women of Season 31

The female cast of Season 31 is no less impressive. Yeongsuk, born in 1990 and based in Bucheon, is an 11-year veteran manager at a public enterprise, with expertise in fund management. Jeongsuk, also born in 1990, is a professional ballet instructor with ten years of experience. Soonja, born in 1991, is a book designer at a literary publishing house. Yeongjja, born in 1994, works as a civil engineering designer in Seongnam. Hyeonsuk, born in 1992 and based in Yeouido, is an 11-year manager at a national bank.

And then there is Jeonghui — born in 1993, based in Bundang, a trained automotive designer who studied in Germany and completed an internship at Audi before returning to Korea. Sharing a profession with Yeongsu, her arrival prompted an immediate moment of mutual recognition between the two contestants that viewers quickly flagged as a potential source of connection — or rivalry.

Okson: The Contestant Nobody Saw Coming

In any season of 'I Am Solo,' there is usually one participant whose backstory captures the cultural conversation. In Season 31, that person is Okson — and her story is genuinely unlike anything the show has featured before.

Born in 1993 and based on Yeongjong Island (home of Incheon International Airport), Okson graduated with a business degree and went on to work as a flight attendant. When her airline went bankrupt, she found herself at a crossroads — and made a decision that has left viewers alternately stunned and impressed: she joined the campaign team of a major presidential candidate as a spokesperson.

"I thought it was an opportunity," she explained to her fellow contestants, with a pragmatism that the room — and the viewing audience — found difficult to argue with. "I wasn't doing it because of strong political beliefs. I saw it as a chance to develop my career, and I took it." She is currently employed in strategy planning at another airline, having leveraged her unconventional resume into continued professional growth.

Online reaction was swift and overwhelming. "역대 나솔 출연자 중 가장 화제" (the most buzzed-about contestant in the show's history) became a phrase circulating widely in Korean fan communities. Others simply posted: "대체 어느 후보 캠프였냐" — "Which candidate's campaign was it, though?" — a question that has, as of writing, not been answered, and which seems likely to remain one of the season's most delicious ongoing mysteries.

First-Day Sparks: Okson's Pursuit of Yeongho and Sangcheol

Beyond the career reveals, the premiere episode wasted little time establishing the emotional dynamics that will drive the rest of the season. Okson, whose energy and directness were evident from the first moment she walked into Solo Land, quickly identified two targets for her attention: Yeongho, the young dentist, and Sangcheol, the in-house lawyer.

Her approach to Yeongho was characteristically bold — a stream of direct compliments that had him instinctively waving her off with the Korean equivalent of "easy there, that's a bit much." Defconn, watching from the sidelines, offered his read: "If someone keeps telling you you're handsome, feelings will develop." Host Song Hae-na agreed, predicting that Yeongho's resolve was already beginning to soften.

Yeongho himself, in a separate interview segment, gave a remarkably candid assessment: "People who have very high energy usually make me uncomfortable. But Okson is different. Her attention didn't feel burdensome." For viewers, this was the moment the ship had officially set sail.

Okson also sought out Sangcheol — the quieter, more introverted lawyer — for a private one-on-one conversation early in the evening. "I came because I'm interested in you," she told him. Sangcheol, in his own interview: "The fact that she's so different from me is exactly what makes me curious about her."

What's Ahead in Season 31

'I Am Solo' Season 31 continues weekly on SBS Plus and ENA, with the full cast now introduced and the emotional groundwork firmly laid. The combination of Okson's magnetic backstory, Gyeongsu's quiet fan-favorite appeal, Yeongho's "young and rich" mystique, and a female cast full of accomplished professionals promises a season that will be difficult to look away from.

For a show that has built its brand on finding romance in unexpected places, Season 31 has already confirmed one thing: when you fill a room with people this interesting, the sparks tend to follow. Korean viewers, and increasingly global ones who have discovered 'I Am Solo' through streaming, will be watching closely to see which connections survive the journey — and which ones leave everyone wondering what might have been.
